Antique French Petit Confit Terracotta Pot with Yellow Ochre Glaze - 1
An antique French petit confit pot with a rich, darker yellow ochre glaze and beautifully textured terracotta body. The dipped upper section has plenty of surface character, with bumps, glaze blisters and smooth, timeworn chips reflecting its age and working life. Its modest size makes it an appealing decorative piece for a kitchen dresser, rustic shelf or country dining table.
Confit pots were traditional staples of French country kitchens, particularly in southern France, where they were used to store cooked duck and goose beneath a protective layer of fat before refrigeration. These practical preserving vessels have since become admired for their earthy colours and simple forms. Their connection with French provincial life also extends to art: the yellow earthenware vessel in Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers belongs to this tradition of rustic confit pottery. Today, this example would make a lovely display piece on its own or filled with dried flowers.
