H.W. Klein for Bramin Møbler — Set of 8 Mahogany Dining Chairs (6+2)
An elegant set of eight Danish-made mahogany dining chairs designed by H.W. Klein for Bramin Møbler, combining two complementary backrest designs with matching original striped upholstery.
The set comprises two taller chairs, each featuring six slender, raised vertical spindles, alongside six lower chairs with curved horizontal backrests. The contrast gives the set a distinctive appearance, with the taller pair particularly suited to either end of a dining table. Turned legs and matching upholstered seats bring the two designs together, while the mahogany adds warmth to their understated Scandinavian styling.
Henry Walter Klein, born in Norway in 1919, trained in cabinetmaking before studying in Denmark under the influential designer Finn Juhl. His work reflects the Danish Modern emphasis on balanced proportions, carefully considered shapes and skilled craftsmanship. After establishing his own furniture and interiors business in Norway, Klein moved to Denmark in 1960 to work full-time with Bramin. His output encompassed dining furniture, sideboards, tables and upholstered seating, making him closely associated with the manufacturer’s mid-century designs.
Based in Bramming, Denmark, Bramin Møbler developed from N.A. Jørgensens Møbelfabrik, adopting the Bramin name in the late 1950s. The company became known for furniture that combined practical everyday use with the clean lines and warmth of Scandinavian design. Its range included seating, dining tables and cabinet furniture, with advertising placing particular emphasis on quality, form and function. Alongside its long association with Klein, Bramin collaborated with designers including Hans Olsen, Johannes Andersen, Kurt Østervig and Frank Reenskaug, securing its place within the wider story of Danish Modern furniture.
These chairs offer a characterful example of that design tradition, with the contrasting backrests adding interest and the original striped upholstery retaining their period appeal.
Dimensions
Two taller spindle-back chairs: H97cm × W47cm × D48 cm. Seat height: 48cm.
Six lower slat-back chairs: H79cm × W50cm × D52 cm. Seat height: 48cm.
Condition
Great vintage condition overall, with minor signs of use commensurate with age, including occasional scuffs. The original upholstery retains ample padding, with light staining to the fabric consistent with age and use.
